What Is Dental Scaling?

Dental scaling is a common professional dental cleaning procedure used to remove plaque and tartar that cannot be completely removed through regular brushing and flossing.

Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that forms continuously on the teeth. When plaque is not removed effectively, it can harden into tartar, also known as dental calculus. Tartar can accumulate around the teeth and along the gum line, providing an environment where bacteria can thrive.

Over time, plaque and tartar may contribute to tooth decay, bad breath, gum inflammation and gum disease.

At Dr M Dental Clinic Ipoh, we perform dental scaling using the Anthos® u-PZ7 ultrasonic scaler, followed by air-powered tooth polishing using the NSK® Prophy-Mate neo with NSK® FLASH pearl.

The combination of ultrasonic scaling and air pearl polishing helps leave the teeth feeling clean, smooth and refreshed.

What Happens During Dental Scaling?

The procedure generally consists of several steps.

Step 1: Dental Examination

Before scaling begins, the dentist will examine your teeth and gums.

We look for visible plaque and tartar, gum inflammation, bleeding, staining and other areas that may require particular attention. This allows us to determine where cleaning is needed and whether any additional dental treatment may be recommended.

Step 2: Ultrasonic Scaling

The dentist or dental professional then uses an Anthos® u-PZ7 ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar from the teeth.

Unlike traditional hand scaling, ultrasonic scaling uses high-frequency vibrations at the tip of the instrument to help disrupt and remove deposits from the tooth surface. Water is also used during the procedure to help cool and rinse the treatment area.

The ultrasonic scaler can be guided along the tooth surfaces and around the gum line to remove accumulated tartar.

You may hear a buzzing or vibrating sound during this stage. Some patients may also feel water spray and mild vibrations as the scaler moves across their teeth.

For many patients, ultrasonic scaling provides a convenient and efficient way of removing deposits compared with relying entirely on traditional hand instruments.

Step 3: Cleaning Around the Gum Line

Particular attention is given to areas where plaque and tartar commonly accumulate, including around the gum line and between teeth.

These areas can be difficult to clean thoroughly at home, especially when tartar has already hardened.

The dentist will work carefully around the teeth to remove visible deposits while taking into consideration the condition and sensitivity of the gums.

Step 4: Rinsing and Checking the Teeth

After the main scaling is completed, the teeth are rinsed and checked again.

Any remaining visible deposits may be removed before proceeding to the polishing stage.

Scaling primarily focuses on removing plaque and tartar. It does not necessarily remove every external stain from the tooth surface, which is why polishing is performed afterwards.

What Is Air Pearl Polishing?

After scaling, we perform air-powered tooth polishing using the NSK® Prophy-Mate neo coupled with NSK® FLASH pearl.

Instead of using a conventional polishing cup alone, an air polishing system uses a controlled stream of air, water and polishing powder to clean the tooth surfaces.

NSK® FLASH pearl is made with spherical particles designed for supragingival polishing and stain removal.

The polishing stage is particularly useful for removing external stains and surface deposits, such as staining associated with food and drinks.

Step 5: Applying FLASH pearl Air Polishing

The dentist directs the Prophy-Mate neo nozzle over the tooth surfaces while the system delivers a controlled spray of air, water and FLASH pearl polishing powder.

The nozzle can be positioned to access different areas of the mouth, including tooth surfaces that may be more difficult to reach.

The polishing process helps remove external stains and residual surface deposits that remain after scaling.

Step 6: Cleaning Between and Around the Teeth

The polishing spray is carefully directed around different areas of the teeth.

The NSK Prophy-Mate neo is designed with different nozzle angles to facilitate access to various tooth surfaces, including areas around the molars and the front teeth.

This allows the dental professional to systematically work through the mouth rather than concentrating only on the front surfaces of the teeth.

Step 7: Final Rinse

Once polishing is completed, the mouth is rinsed to remove remaining powder and debris.

The teeth are then checked to ensure that the cleaning procedure has been completed thoroughly.

What Do Your Teeth Feel Like After Scaling and Polishing?

One of the most noticeable differences after dental scaling and air polishing is how the teeth feel.

After tartar and surface deposits have been removed, the teeth can feel:

Removing external stains can also make the natural colour of the teeth appear cleaner and brighter.

However, dental scaling and polishing are not the same as professional teeth whitening. Scaling and polishing remove deposits and external stains, while whitening is a separate treatment designed to lighten the natural colour of teeth.

Why Is Regular Dental Scaling Important?

Brushing and flossing at home are essential, but they cannot always remove hardened tartar once it has formed.

Regular professional cleaning allows dental professionals to remove deposits from areas that are difficult to clean effectively at home.

The appropriate frequency of dental scaling depends on your oral health, gum condition, plaque and tartar accumulation, oral hygiene habits and individual risk factors.

Some people may require more frequent professional cleaning, while others may need it less often.

Your dentist can recommend a suitable cleaning interval after examining your teeth and gums.

Is Dental Scaling Painful?

Most patients tolerate routine ultrasonic scaling well.

You may experience some sensitivity, vibration or mild discomfort, particularly if there is significant tartar accumulation, gum inflammation or existing tooth sensitivity.

If an area feels particularly sensitive, let your dentist know. The procedure can be adjusted according to your comfort and clinical needs.
